How it works

Instantly reads the web around the clock so you don't have to. This is what happens between a story breaking somewhere and it reaching your phone, usually in about a minute.

Six steps, about a minute

Each step starts the moment the one before it finishes. The newest stories are always handled first.

What makes a Top story

Not every alert is breaking news.

Speed of coverage. When many outlets report the same event within an hour, the story becomes a Top story. When a story keeps growing, people who follow it hear about that too.

Breadth of coverage. A story that's very widely reported over a longer time becomes a Top story as well, even if it built up slowly.

Relevance. Separately, every story gets a 1 to 10 relevance score, so you can set alerts to reach you only when something really matters.

Sources & credits

Instantly writes its stories from other people's reporting. You should always be able to see whose.

Every source, linked. Each story lists the outlets it was written from, each linking to the original article. Good journalism deserves the clicks.

Photo credits. Photos come from the story's sources, news image search, or Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, and always show who took them or where they came from.

Bias ratings. Leaning bars use ratings from AllSides, Ad Fontes Media and Media Bias/Fact Check. Where none of them has rated an outlet, the bar is estimated by AI and labeled that way.

AI-written, clearly. Every Instantly article is written by AI from the sources listed under it. AI can make mistakes, so for anything important, check the originals. Spotted one? Tell us.

Watch it work on your own topics.
